To work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a human pathology (diagnostic) laboratory in New Zealand, current law requires practitioners to be registered with the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Technologist's Board and to hold an annual or interim practising certificate.

The vocational pathway to becoming a medical laboratory scientist in NZ (and most other parts of the world) requires students to complete a Bachelor degree in MLSc followed by a minimum period of 6 months internship of supervised practise.  BMLSc programmes of study are provided by the Auckland University of Technology, Massey University and the University of Otago.
