about the NZIMLS


Q.  What is the role of the NZIMLS?
A.  The NZIMLS acts on behalf of its members to administer the affairs of the profession and has a non-industrial focus.  The Institute is the main provider of continuing education for the profession of Medical Laboratory Science in New Zealand. 

Q.  What is the MLSB?
A. 
The NZ Medical Laboratory Science Board (MLSB) is a separate body from the NZIMLS, with statutory power to register and issue practising certificates to Scientists and Technicians.  As part of their role they consider all applications for Scientist or Technician registration for those working in a diagnostic medical laboratory in New Zealand.  More information about the MLSB is available by visiting http://www.mltboard.org.nz/
Q.  How are the affairs of the NZIMLS administered?
A.  Through the elected Council of the NZIMLS and via contracts with external groups to provide services eg. Executive Officer, CPD programme Coordinator and Advertising Manager.
Q.  What is the makeup of the NZIMLS Council?
A.  Council comprises a 
President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and 5 Regional Representatives.  The makeup of Council is voted for each year by the Membership of the NZIMLS.  All Council positions are honorary - ie. people donate their time to the administration of their profession.

Q.  How often does Council meet and what do they discuss?
A.  Council meets quarterly to plan Institute examinations, review progress with the CPD programme, discuss the NZIMLS Journal with the Editor, consider the financial affairs of the Institute, plan the Annual Scientific Meeting and other CE events, and consider correspondence from members and other organisations.

Q.  How long has the NZIMLS been the professional body of Scientists and Technicians?
A.  The NZ Association of Bacteriologists (NZAB) was first formed in Wellington in April 1946 and was the forerunner to the organisation we today call the NZIMLS.  The Institute will celebrate its 60th birthday in 2006 and to mark this occasion there will be a commemorative issue of the NZIMLS Journal.
