NZIMLS CODE OF ETHICS

Introduction

Members of the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science (NZIMLS) who are registered to practise as Medical Laboratory Scientists or Technicians in New Zealand, shall observe the Code of Ethics and comply with any rulings introduced by the NZIMLS to protect the professional standards and reputation of the practice of medical laboratory science in New Zealand.

General Obligations

1. It is the duty of Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians to uphold the dignity and honour of the profession, to accept its ethical principles and not engage in any activity which will bring discredit to the profession.

2. Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians, shall practise in accordance with the Law and with the “International Standard ISO 15189:2003 Medical Laboratories - Particular requirements for Quality and Competence”, as currently defined by International Accreditation of New Zealand (IANZ).

3. Medical laboratory science shall be practiced by registered Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians or persons acting under their supervision.

4. At all times the primary aim shall be to provide valued and precise clinical information.

5. All Medical Laboratory Scientists shall maintain currency of competence in the knowledge and practise of medical laboratory science and shall share their knowledge with colleagues and promote learning.

6. Medical laboratory science shall be practiced without bias to a patient's or colleague's race, religion, gender, age, political belief or medical condition. 

7. Every Medical Laboratory Scientist and Technician shall respect the confidential and personal nature of professional records and, except where the best interest of the patient requires, or the law demands, shall not disclose such information to anyone without the patient's authorisation.
