About the NZ Journal of MLS

The NZJMLS is a peer-reviewed publication containing articles on Medical Laboratory Science and related topics. The Journal is the official publication of the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science and is circulated to members of the Institute and libraries in New Zealand. The Journal is open access in that it does not charge its readers or institutions for access. Users have the rights to "read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles" The current circulation of the Journal is about 3,500 and is published three times per year. It has been published continuously since 1946.


Submission of articles for publication is not restricted to members of the Institute. Articles from all major disciplines of medical laboratory science as well as articles of interest to the profession will be considered. The Journal invites submissions under the following categories:

  • Original articles
  • Review articles
  • Research letters (brief communications)
  • Case studies
  • Book reviews

The Journal is abstracted by CINAHL, Excerpta Medica/EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholarly, Thomson Gale and the Australasian Medical Index. The Journal's Editors are members of the World Association of Medical Editors (www.wame.org)


Journal Prize

The NZIMLS Council has approved an Annual Journal prize to the value of NZ$1,500 for the best peer-reviewed article published by NZIMLS financial members in the Journal during the Calendar year. The article can be a review article, case study, research paper or technical communication. Excluded are Fellowship dissertations.

Many studies are presented at Annual Scientific Meeting, SIG meeting and the North and South Island Seminars, yet are rarely submitted to the Journal for wider dissemination to the profession. Consider submitting your presentation to the Journal, if accepted, you are in consideration for the Rob Siebers Journal Prize and you will also earn valuable CPD points.

All articles published during the calendar year (March, July and November issues) by current NZIMLS members will be considered. The Editor, Deputy Editors and the President of the NZIMLS, (who themselves are ineligible), will judge all eligible articles. Their decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.


 

Editorial independence

The New Zealand Journal of Medical Laboratory Science (NZJMLS) is a peer-reviewed publication containing articles on medical laboratory science and related topics. The NZJMLS adheres to the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) Policy on “The Relationship between Journal Editors-in-Chief and Owners” available at www.wame.org/editorial-independence. More specifically, the Editor has editorial independence and as such has full authority over the journal's editorial content including how and when information is published. Editorial decisions are based solely on the validity of the work and its importance to readers, not on the policies or commercial interests of the owner.

The NZJMLS is the official journal of, and owned by, the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science (NZIMLS). The NZIMLS does not interfere in the evaluation, selection or editing of individual articles, either directly or by creating an environment in which editorial decisions are influenced.
