About the Role
As the Scientist Unit Manager of Anatomical Pathology at LabPLUS, you will hold a pivotal leadership position, reporting directly to the Operations Manager. In this role, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the laboratory is fully equipped—both in staffing and resources—to meet current and future service demands. You will lead a large, multidisciplinary team and oversee operational delivery across Histology, Non-Gynae Cytology , and Electron Microscopy. Your remit includes managing budgets, developing business plans, and contributing to strategic projects that shape the direction of diagnostic services.
This is a role at the forefront of operational excellence. You’ll guide scientific and technical teams, uphold quality assurance and health and safety standards, and embed a culture of continuous improvement. Mentorship and professional development will be central to your leadership approach, as develop and implement new testing protocols aligned with ISO 15189 standards.
Collaboration is key—working closely with Histopathologists and clinical teams to ensure timely, accurate, and patient-focused diagnostic services that support informed clinical decision-making.
About the Team/Service/ Location
LabPLUS is an IANZ accredited medical laboratory and is one of New Zealand's premier laboratories. LabPLUS are part of the state-owned Te Toka Tumai Auckland. We offer a comprehensive pathology service for Auckland City Hospital, Starship Children’s Hospital, National Women's Health, and the Greenlane Clinical Centre. LabPLUS is also a major referral laboratory for specialised laboratory tests for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
About You
You pair scientific credibility with inclusive leadership. Essential attributes include:
• Tertiary education (or higher) in MedicalLaboratoryScience.
• Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with a current APC.
• Proven success leading highperforming laboratory teams and managing budgets.
• Deep understanding of quality, healthandsafety and continuousimprovement systems.
• Collaborative style that nurtures professional growth and champions equity, including a commitment to TeTiritioWaitangi.
• Expertise in Histology, Non-Gynae Cytology or Electron Microscopy is an advantage but not mandatory.
