If you answered yes to any of these, then we are looking for you to join our dedicated team as a full-time permanent Forensic Pathology Technician with the Northern Forensic Pathology Service based at Auckland City Hospital / Te Toka Tumai.
While qualified candidates who have a QMLT (Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician) and an APC (Annual Practising Certificate) with the Medical Sciences Council are preferred, we are open to having a Trainee learn the ropes in our facility and service.
The Opportunity
This isn’t your typical 9-to-5 job. As a Forensic Pathology Technician, you’re not just working in a lab; you’re an integral part of post-mortem examinations, performing detailed eviscerations. While not glamorous, the work you do is incredibly important to family, whānau, and the community. The position working hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. Rostered weekend on-call shifts are part of the role, but you’ll only be rostered on once you have some experience under your belt.
What You’ll Do
• Assist pathologists with post-mortem examinations (including evisceration) and specimen collection in cases, including any deaths that are sudden, unexplained, violent or appear self-inflicted. This includes suspicious deaths and homicides.
• Assist with hospital post-mortems and work on cases involving infectious diseases.
• We also provide support for the National Perinatal Pathology Service (NPPS) as they carry out perinatal postmortems
• Maintain accurate case records and ensure chain of custody
• Carry out post-mortem imaging including photography and in-house CT scanning
• Management of deceased/tūpāpaku
• Help with day-to-day running and maintenance of theatre and supporting the service
What You’ll Bring
• Attention to detail and accuracy with excellent documentation skills
• A cool head under pressure
• Background in forensic pathology, science, mortuary work , forensic science, medical laboratory work or funeral work is recommended but not required
• Some knowledge of working with different cultural backgrounds
• Ability to follow explicit procedures and maintain confidentiality
• Ability to handle sensitive material with care and discretion

Note: For those who are not qualified, you will be employed as a trainee and will be expected to work towards the requirements of the NZIMLS QMLT (a theory exam, practical logbook, and completion of hours). Once the QMLT is successfully achieved, you will move into the role of a permanent, qualified Forensic Pathology Technician.
