About the role
We are seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist (Cytogenetics) to join our laboratory team. This role focuses on conventional cytogenetic testing with a strong emphasis on G-banded chromosome analysis, alongside molecular cytogenetic techniques including FISH and microarray analysis. This is a 40-hour per week role, working onsite in central Auckland, Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 5pm.
What you’ll be doing
Working within a collaborative and quality-focused laboratory, you will contribute to the delivery of accurate and timely diagnostic results that support clinicians and improve patient outcomes by:
• Performing G-banded chromosome analysis, including specimen culture, harvest, slide preparation, analysis and interpretation.
• Conducting FISH testing and analysis.
• Performing and assisting with microarray (array CGH/SNP array) processing and analysis.
• Analysing cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic data and contributing to report preparation.
• Maintaining accurate laboratory documentation and data records.
• Working in accordance with laboratory quality systems and accreditation standards.
• Contributing to method validation, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
• Collaborating with colleagues to maintain efficient laboratory workflow and turnaround times.
About you
You are an experienced Cytogenetics Scientist with a minimum of two years’ experience performing G-banded cytogenetic analysis. Experience with FISH and/or microarray techniques would be an advantage.
You hold a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc) or equivalent qualification and are registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, or eligible for registration.
You take pride in producing accurate, high-quality work, balancing efficiency with strong attention to detail. Comfortable working independently, you also value being part of a collaborative and supportive team environment.
