Second in Charge Scientist Position - Microbiology

We have a permanent full-time position in our Microbiology department, Palmerston North.  

 

Medlab Central Limited is based in the central North Island of New Zealand. There are four centres in the group: Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Palmerston North, and Whanganui. 

The Palmerston North, Gisborne and Whanganui laboratories are located in their respective local public hospitals and provide laboratory services to both community and hospital patients. Palmerston North Hospital is also the regional referral centre for oncology patients in the lower central North Island. 

 

Our Microbiology Department is seeking a dedicated and motivated Second in charge 

Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team in a permanent, full-time role (40 hours per week), with rostered evening and weekend shifts. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a vital and fast-paced area of our laboratory services. 

You must hold a valid APC with the NZMSC and be able to work permanently in New Zealand.


Key Responsibilities: 

To aid in processing patients' specimens and reporting results accurately in a minimum amount of time.   

Effective communication with the Charge Scientist and Microbiologist. 

Complete tasks as per methods/roster in a timely manner  

Take part in the training of staff members in all aspects of the appropriate department and general laboratory procedures, including safety.  

Maintain a safe working environment and ensure accidents are reported and staff trained with reference to the Laboratory Manual  

Assist in the selection, evaluation and documentation of new products  

Assist in the management, storage and rotation of stock levels to ensure items are used within expiry dates and waste is minimised 

Assist in equipment maintenance and calibration, and staff training to operate such equipment 

 

Perform and help monitor internal and external QC programme performance, including trouble shooting out of range results 

Initiate corrective action procedures when substandard work arises according to protocol in Laboratory Manual  

Authorise test results, as recommended by the Microbiologist, in a thorough and timely manner   

Assist laboratory and clinical staff with enquiries 

Assist in method monitoring and review  

Able to perform, complete and document special projects  

At all times work in accordance with laboratory policy and take responsibility for acts performed when practicing
