Are you an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist looking for variety, responsibility, and a lifestyle change in one of New Zealand's most beautiful locations?

Pathlab is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Core Laboratory team at Pathlab Taupō, based at Taupō Hospital. This is a great opportunity to work across a broad range of disciplines in a close-knit, supportive team, while enjoying everything the Lake Taupō region has to offer.

At Pathlab, we provide high-quality, efficient, and progressive diagnostic services that support patient care across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Lakes regions. We combine scientific expertise with modern digital laboratory systems and a commitment to continuous improvement to deliver trusted results for our communities.

Why Taupō?

Set on the shores of Lake Taupō, with views to the mountains of Tongariro National Park, Taupō offers an outstanding lifestyle. Fishing, boating, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and golf are all on your doorstep, alongside a relaxed town centre, great cafés, short commutes, and easy road access to Rotorua, Hamilton, Tauranga, and Napier.

Whether you're relocating from elsewhere in New Zealand or returning home from overseas, Taupō provides the opportunity to enjoy more of what matters outside of work while broadening your scientific career.

About the Role

As a Core Laboratory Scientist, you will provide accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic testing that supports clinicians to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Working as part of a 24/7 team, you'll process, analyse, and report specimens across Biochemistry, Haematology, Transfusion, and Microbiology, in line with Pathlab's quality, safety, and IANZ accreditation standards.

This role includes:

- Processing urgent specimens promptly and communicating significant abnormal results to clinicians.
- Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory analysers and equipment.
- Participating in internal and external quality assurance and quality control activities.
- Working closely with the Laboratory Coordinator to support the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
- Training and supporting colleagues and performing phlebotomy duties as required.
- Participating in a 24/7 roster, including late shifts, on-call nights, weekends, public holidays.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a capable, adaptable scientist who enjoys variety and thrives in a busy, hospital-based laboratory. Experienced core laboratory scientists are preferred; however, we're also happy to hear from exceptional graduates who are ready for the variety and responsibility of a 24/7 service.

You will bring:

- A Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) or equivalent.
- Current registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current APC, or eligibility to obtain registration.
- Sound knowledge and relevant experience in a similar core laboratory service.
- The ability to troubleshoot equipment and workflow issues and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Effective, empathetic communication and strong teamwork skills.
- Good organisational and planning skills, and flexibility in managing changing priorities.
- Willingness to participate fully in the 24/7 roster.

Desirable Experience

- At least five years' experience working in a core laboratory environment.
- Experience in, or enthusiasm for, training and mentoring colleagues.
- An understanding of how a laboratory runs day to day – workflow, rostering, stock, and quality.
- An interest in developing into a senior or coordination role over time.

Why Join Pathlab?

Alongside a supportive team environment and strong learning culture, we also offer:

- A varied role across multiple Core Laboratory disciplines.
- A friendly, close-knit team in a supportive hospital-based laboratory.
- A genuine pathway to grow, with opportunities in mentoring, quality, and laboratory coordination.
- Ongoing training and professional development.
- Industry-leading digital reporting and technology platforms that support collaboration, efficiency, and excellent patient outcomes.
- Free, confidential wellbeing support for all employees via Clearhead.
- The opportunity to build a long-term career with one of New Zealand's leading pathology providers.

A Pathway to Grow

For the right person, this role offers more than benchwork. We're keen to invest in a scientist who shows leadership potential, with opportunities to build experience in mentoring, quality, and the day-to-day coordination of the Taupō laboratory.
